Referring to our letter of the 27th of March and

to your reply of the 5th of April No 9751, I have the honour

ril 1900. to enclose a copy of a letter which we have received from the

Royal Mint from which it will be seen that the Hong Kong

coinage cannot at present be undertaken there and as from

July next only to the extent of half the deliveries desired.

In these circumstances I beg to enquire whether the

Secretary of State will telegraph to the Colonial Government

authorizing the Governor to make arrangements for the coinage

being carried out in India as he recently desired, or whether

we should endeavour to arrange that the coinage should be

executed by the Birmingham Mint as has been done on such

previous occasions as the Royal Mint has been unable to under-

take the work.

The charges of the Birmingham Mint for coinages are

more than half as much again as those of the Royal Mint.
